Concerning Your Finished Art Projects

Refers to your clay projects only.

Due to the medium of working with clay, there is a drying time required before pieces can be put in the kiln, fired, and glazed. Your pieces will need to dry slowly depending on the size you make them. Before our last session together Eileen will discuss with you what glaze colors you would like and she will glaze them for you. Arrangements will be made for shipping your pieces to you when they are finished.
Payment will be collected for shipping costs before you leave. If you live in the five state areas (MN, WI, IA, ND, SD), we will ship them by Spee-Dee Delivery. Outside those areas we will use UPS. You can expect your pieces to be delivered generally within 3 weeks.

Open Studio Time for Artists

Starting June 4th from 9am to Noon will be open studio time!
Artists can bring their works, materials, and equipment to work on their own projects in a fun setting in the Barn! Every other week on Mondays, open studio time will be available for a small fee of $20.00 for a 3 hours work time. During that time, I will be available to help out with another set of “Artist’s Eyes” to help look for those Elements and Principles of Design that are working or need to be incorporated into your art pieces. Coffee will be on! Bottled water and tea will be available to you, too! Sometimes, we artist types need to take a break from our work and take a walk down to the dock to gain perspective. So, set up your work station upstairs in the barn or on the main level. Maybe you would like to work outside near the garden or on the deck, go ahead and find your spot. The best part is to know that there will be those nearby to encourage and help us simply enjoy the gifts God has given each one of us. Parking will be in the front pasture on those Mondays. Panda, our horse will be nearby, but fenced off from the parking area.

Date/Time:
9:00am to noon  June 4  Monday
9:00am to noon  June 18  Monday
9:00am to noon  July 2  Monday
9:00am to noon  July 16  Monday
9:00am to noon  July 30  Monday
9:00am to noon  August 13  Monday
Cost each week — $20.00 for a three-hour studio time.
No need to sign up. Just show up!

Group Event Classes

A group event could consist of a family, group of friends, or a special event offered by a community group you are a part of. You simply need to pick one art project from the list below and set up a time with Eileen to have your art event in the Barn!

LIST OF ART PROJECTS

Raku Pottery Firing
Raku firing is very exciting! The firing takes place outside and the glazing is done inside the barn. It involves brushing on a glaze to a ready-made pottery piece that Eileen created (a 4” wide x 4” high small crock). You will have a variety of color choices. The outcome of a raku firing is always a surprise! After you glaze your piece, you will then watch as it is put in the raku kiln at 1900 Degrees Fahrenheit, then it is moved to a garbage can filled with combustible materials, and followed by a dip in a tank of water (where it cools off). You will be able to bring it home that day! (Note – cracks can happen in this process. Raku pottery is not food safe or able to hold liquids.) *This activity is funded in part by a grant from the Five Wings Arts Council with funds provided by the McKnight Foundation.

Lace Pottery Bowl
Lace pottery is food safe and dishwasher safe. You will be transferring a lace doily to your stoneware slab of clay. A number of steps are involved in making your bowl. If you would like a two-tone glaze, you will be painting on an underglaze over your doily. If you would like a solid color, you will not do that step. The bowl size will be 6 inches wide by 2-1/2 inched deep. *This project will need two weeks to dry and be fired. So you will need to pick them up or have them shipped.

Handmade Pottery Tile
Your handmade pottery tile will be ½ inch thick and 6x6 inches wide. This tile could be used as a coaster or put them altogether and make a tile design that could be put on the wall or as tile inlays on the floor. You can use your imagination and come up with a unique use for them! They will be made of stoneware clay and glazed. The construction process uses a slab technique. Then you will either be adding clay to make a design on it or cutting away a design. You could do both, adding and cutting away if you would like! A choice of glaze colors will be offered. It will be an overall color. *This project requires slow drying and a glaze firing. It will generally take two weeks before it will be ready to be picked up. You can also arrange with me to have them shipped if you would like.

Music in the Studio

We will be listening to Pandora (online music) while we work, so if you would like to bring your own headphones please feel free to listen to what you love to listen to while you are creating. We ask that classes discuss the playing of music in the studios and reach a group consensus on the time of day, the volume, and the type of music to be played. If you are bothered by the music that’s playing, it is helpful if you express your concern and try to help others understand why the music bothers you. Tolerance and consideration works wonders in working together!
